New Treatment: PhotoFacial at Mendocino Beauty
We’ve all been there. It’s 10 p.m., you’ve just finished brushing your teeth and washing your face, now you’re staring into the mirror, scrutinizing your skin. Where did those fine lines come from? What’s the deal with this redness? And these pores! What is up with these pores? Then you break the spell, go to bed and think “Well I guess them’s the breaks kid.” Perhaps you’ve thought about getting treatments for these imperfections- which by the way, all of us possess in some form or another- but then the idea of inconveniencing yourself by going out of town or paying exorbitant fees makes you feel a little vain or frivolous. So you learn to live with these lines and dots, but underneath it all you wish you didn’t have to rely on foundation and concealer so much.
Mendocino Beauty is pleased to announce that we now offer state of the art PhotoFacial treatments.

Using Photo Facial Technology, clients can expect to see a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, enlarged pores and discoloration.
These gentle sessions, which use the combined effects of light and heat energy (LHE), are the first step in helping you put your best skin forward. This machine emits gentle pulses of light and heat to trigger an immune response in the skin, which leads to increased fibroblast production and new collagen formation. In other words, new skin! The treatment also opens the pores, allowing for enhanced absorption of serums and creams.
This unique technology will give you smooth creamy skin with reduced pore size, evened out texture and even correct discoloration. What’s great about this gentle treatment is that afterwards you won’t experience any redness or need for down time. People have experienced benefits from just one treatment, but for maximum results a series of 8 treatments, done twice weekly, is recommended.
Photo Facial: $100
Add-on to Custom Blended Facial: $50
Series of Eight: $600

Go Real or Go Home: The Importance of Choosing Food Sourced Supplements Over Synthetics-By Jake Petrykowski

Dietary supplements are no longer considered a luxury, but rather a crucial component for maintaining wellness.
By now, most of us realize that dietary supplements are no longer a luxury item. They are mandatory for achieving and maintaining optimal health. What most people might not know, however, is that if they are taking supplements whose nutrients are derived from synthetic sources, they’d do better to just dump them down the drain, as that’s where they’re headed anyhow. Our bodies are not designed to recognize synthetic nutrients. Thus most of what’s in your typical multivitamin passes through the body unutilized. What’s worse is that these synthetic nutrients put a toxic strain on your liver and kidneys. A Harvard study of over 22,000 Physicians reported no benefit to synthetic vitamins while other studies report toxicity and serious side effects (1)

Ever hear someone say multi-vitamins upset their stomach? That's probably because they are taking a multi whose components are largely synthetic. Plant based supplements don't cause stomach upset as our bodies recognize them as food.
Have you ever heard someone say that taking vitamins upsets their stomach? Synthetic nutrients are often sourced from petroleum and charcoal tar derivatives. It makes sense that petroleum and charcoal would upset someone’s stomach, as these are not food. Charcoal and petroleum are all well and good if you were looking for products for your vehicle or your barbeque but if you care about your kidneys, liver and gall bladder this is bad news. These toxic synthetics can’t be used by our cells but they may do damage. Our cells are designed to take in nutrients from food, not from synthetic chemicals. In addition, some research is indicating that synthetic vitamins may actually cause nutritional deficiencies! One such study was printed in the Journal of the American Medical Association (February 2007).[2] The study found an increased death risk when synthetic vitamins were taken with the hope of improving health or preventing nutritional deficiencies.

It is important to check the nutritional labels on dietary supplements to ensure that their elements are sourced from plants and food. Synthetic nutrients can do more harm to our bodies than good.
As consumers become more aware of the dangers of synthetic vitamins and nutrients, supplement companies are starting to add “whole food” components to their supplements. “Whole food” and “natural” claims can be very misleading. According to the Organic Consumers Association, “90% or more of the vitamins and supplements now on the market labeled as ‘natural’ or ‘food based’ are spiked with synthetic chemicals.” When you are reading a supplement label be sure that there is a food and/or plant source listed for each nutrient. If a nutrient has no source listed on is label, it is likely synthetic.

In 1951 a woman would have had to eat only two peaches to get her RDA of vitamin A. Due to unsustainable farming practices, the erosion of topsoil, and unripe harvesting practices, that same woman today would have to eat 53 peaches to get her RDA of vitamin A.
For over a century commercial farming practices in the U.S. and world wide, have depleted the Earth’s topsoil, which is how a plant sources the trace minerals and elements necessary for providing a complete nutritional profile. “Two peaches would have supplied the current Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin A for adult Women in 1951. Today, a woman would have to eat almost 53 peaches to meet her daily requirements”[3] What’s worse is even if that woman were to eat those 53 peaches in one day, chances are they were pickedgreen from the tree and then gassed to look ripe in the truck on the way to the grocery store. It is during the last 48-72 hours of a plant’s complete growth cycle that a comprehensive phytonutrient profile is created within the finished product (i.e what gets harvested). This is the definition of vine ripened food and it is how fruits and vegetables are meant to be eaten. Unfortunately most of us do not have access to vine-ripened fruits and vegetables on a day- to-day basis.
Eating local, organic produce is a huge step in the right direction. The USDA is currently suggesting that we eat an average of 11 servings of fresh produce each day. Who really eats 330 servings of fruits and veggies per month? The fact is micronutrients are so critical to our health and wellness we can’t leave actually getting them in our diet up to chance. We must supplement and we must supplement only with products that source real food nutrients at nutritionally effective, standardized levels.
It is my professional mission in life to inform and empower as many people as possible about the drastic difference between synthetic and truly whole food sourced nutrients. The fact that synthetic supplements actually cause nutrient depletion is a frightening one. Millions of people each day faithfully take products they have been lead to believe will help increase their wellness when sadly they are robbing their bodies of critical nutrients. I never tire of the calls, texts and emails I get from my clients once they have felt the nourishing power of nutrition that way nature intended. We simply can’t do better until we know better. Knowledge isn’t power. Knowledge and organized action is power.

Embracing Our Imperfections

There will never be a better time than now to embrace your beautiful imperfections, like the well-loved Raggedy Ann doll.
“ When my daughter was young her favorite doll was a Raggedy Ann and she fell asleep each night rubbing her nose against the doll’s cloth face. Over time the face became threadbare and the cotton stuffing bulged from the splits in the fabric. The painted features faded. One day I suggested that it might be time to replace the Raggedy Ann with a newer version. My daughter was horrified. ‘ If I had an accident and my face got ruined would you get a new girl? I love her how she is.’ My child’s wisdom humbled me. We did ‘fix’ the precious doll with masking tape and an indelible magic marker. So Raggedy Ann stayed beautifully imperfect.” This story, by Annie Dillard, poignantly illustrates how we assess beauty primarily from the surface.
As we approach middle-age,we often view ourselves through a glass darkly, concentrating on our imperfections. Each of us is her own worst critic. In my years as a clinical hypnotherapist, I have worked with hundreds of women, each shackledby her inner critic, who keeps her imprisoned inside a limited version of herself. Part of the reason is that we are bombarded with advertising images that reinforce unrealistic, unhealthy perceptions of beauty and perfection.
The women who are portrayed in these ads are photoshopped so much that even iconic 1990′s Supermodel Cindy Crawford, says,“ I wish I was Cindy Crawford.”
Hypnosis can be a more effective tool for the realization of a woman’s singular beauty than any other item in her make-up kit. This is because hypnosis finally tranquilizes that incessant critical voice inside. To explain what I mean, let me tell you a story:
Once upon a time… there was a baby girl who, because she was born prematurely, had a coat of dark fur over her whole body. The first thing her mother said was, “ Oh, she’s so ugly. I don’t want her. She looks like a monkey.” That became the family story. To everyone else it was funny. But as that girl grew up she couldn’t shake the idea that she was unwanted because of her looks. No matter how much she tried consciously to change that belief, it didn’t work. Even when someone paid her a compliment, her critical voice would chime in, “Well, you managed to fool somebody else, but we know the truth don’t we, you’re really ugly.” And that’s what she believed. Until one day…she had a powerful hypnosis session that changed her life. In that session her critical voice was silenced and her inner wisdom (unconditional acceptance) was accessed, so she finally loved herself.
As you may have already guessed this is my story. This quality of self-awareness has continued to unfold. Because hypnotherapy granted me the truest sense of my inviolate lovability, I was inspired to enter this field of work, in order to make this quality of transformation available to others; to celebrate our own unique beauty, as well as the beauty around us; and to remember to be as compassionate to ourselves as we are to others.
In zen there is a philosophy known as wabi-sabi which espouses the idea that imperfection is a necessary part of anything beautiful. According to this school of thought, a so called “flaw” is revered as an integral part of anything which is aesthetically arresting.
You are an original. There never was, is not now, nor will there ever be anyone precisely like you. Honor that uniqueness. Marianne Williamson says,”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
There will never be a better time than now to reteach yourself your own loveliness. There will never be a better time than now to embrace your beautiful imperfections, like the well-loved Raggedy Ann doll.

Get that Winter Glow with an Organic Spray Tan!
FAQ About Sunless Tanning:
Q. What is in a spray tan that makes the skin turn color?
A. The active ingredient is DHA, a three-carbon sugar that interacts with the outermost layer of skin to produce a natural-looking color similar to the sun’s effect, but with no damage.
Q. Does a spray tan provide UV protection?
A. No! You must still use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection cream every few hours when in the direct sun.
Q. How long does the color last?
A. Your sunless tan will last 7 to 10 days depending on how you maintain it and how long your skin takes to naturally slough off. For best results exfoliate thoroughly before the service and moisturize often afterwards.

Peel Primer – All about Acids
What do you think of when you hear the word “chemical peel”?
Toxic chemicals? Burn agents? Drain cleaner?
In reality a chemical peel is one of the most effective ways to encourage cell turnover and lighten and brighten your skin. Peels are comprised of different acids, or chemicals, that are naturally occurring and are chosen for their different skin treating properties. The source of these chemicals is often surprising!
Glycolic: Sugar cane
Lactic: Sour milk
Salicylic: Willow bark
Retinoic: Vitamin A
Mandelic: Almonds
Malic: Apples
Tartaric Acid: Grapes
Some of the conditions a chemical peel can improve are:
- fine lines around the eyes and mouth
- wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
- some types of acne
- mild acne scarring
- age spots, dark patches due to pregnancy, or hormonal birth control (Melasma)
- dull texture and color
Call me for a personal consultation, Fall and Winter are the perfect times to treat your skin with a chemical peel.

False Lashes Oh My!
False Lashes, who doesn’t love them? They make any makeup look more glamorous and the ability to make your eyes look bigger and flirtier is amazing.
Here are my quick and simple steps for applying false lashes on your own.
- Pick your lash type: Individual or strip. If you choose a strip make sure you hold it against your eye to measure and then trim any excess off. I always trim from the inside (shortest lashes) so that the long flirty edges stay intact.
- Lash glue: It comes in clear, white or black. Sometimes the lashes you buy will have some glue included. If you have a choice, buy black. With the white glue you will have to wait to dry and turn clear and the clear is very runny and needs to set up a bit before you apply the lashes. Apply a bit to the underside of your arm and wait 10 minutes to see if there is any reaction.
- BIG TIP: Put a mirror on the counter so you can look down at yourself and see your lashline clearly!!
- Apply a thin line of glue to the back of your non-dominant hand. Wash well when finished!
- Strip: Drag the strip gently through the glue so that a thin line coats the base of the lash. Wave in the air a few times (makes glue a little tacky and it won’t slide around as much). Looking down into the mirror, press the lash evenly to your natural lash line. Repeat.
Individual lashes: Use the method above except using tweezers or your fingers, pick up a cluster of individual lashes and drag the knotted base through a little glue. Drag through your natural lash line and then settle the knot into the base of your lash line. Use varying lengths for a natural look, concentrating the longest ones on the outside edge. - Fill in lashline with a black liner.
- Apply mascara while holding the back of the lashes firmly against a finger so that they don’t come loose with the motion of the mascara wand.
- Enjoy the compliments!!
- Removing false eyelashes: Using lash glue remover or just a gentle cleanser remove gently, never pulling. If you have a strip, wash thoroughly and place back in box. They can be reused several times.
